Norway has two official written languages: Bokmål and Nynorsk.
Bokmål (literally "book language") is used by the vast majority of the population and is based on written Danish, which was the official language during the union of Denmark-Norway.
Nynorsk (literally "new Norwegian") was created in the 19th century based on Norwegian dialects, with the aim of creating a written language that was more authentically Norwegian.
In addition to the two official written languages, there are also a number of Sami languages spoken by the Sami people in northern Norway. These languages are part of the Uralic language family.
